My youngest tried out contact lenses today for the first time. He was nervous and he kept trying to shove the contact lens onto his eye without success. I finally told him that he needed to gently get the lens to barely touch his eye and then give it time to suck on to the eyeball. He got the contact in immediately after I told him this.
This made me realize a couple of things:
1. The power of words is amazing. Though the person teaching him was saying all the right things and being very patient, she wasn't getting through to him. By using different words to describe the same thing, his perspective & approach changed and he experienced success.
2. Observation is key when teaching. Teaching is not only about talking, but also about being in tune with those you teach and adjusting your method/approach as as needed.
In short, choose your words wisely and adjust as needed based on your observations. :)
