Choices And Consequences

When your child comes to you with an issue that they created, such as having forgotten a take home test, remembering it Sunday night at 10 pm and it is due first thing the next morning, what do you do? Do you lecture him to be more responsible? Do you solve the problem for him? Do you let him solve it himself?

I chose to let him take the lead as to what he thought should be done and then discussed it with him until we came up with a reasonable solution where he took full responsibility for his actions, accepted the consequences, and where we both felt good about the solution.

Though he made a mistake, I am proud of him for owning his mistake, for trusting and sharing it with me, and for coming up with a solution. I am glad I stopped myself from lecturing him. He felt really bad about it and was already hard enough on himself. In the end it was a positive learning experience for both of us. :)
