Emotional Flares

Emotions can flare when you least expect it. What can you do?  When it does happen, do your best to get some time alone.  Take a pen and paper and start giving words to your feelings.  Do not analyze them, do not structure anything, just let it flow.  I find just words, adjectives or short descriptions work best.  Keep feeling what you are feeling.  The more words you jut down, the closer you get to feeling and/or seeing in your minds eye the source of the emotional flare.

You will know that you are at the source when you start feeling calm again.  More often than not it will be something in your distant past unrelated to the actual event in the present that caused the flare. Once the source is identified, change it using your current tools.  If it is your inner child feeling sad and abandoned, for example, have your adult self take him/her by the hand and reassure him/her that you will take care of him/her and that he/she is not alone anymore or ever again.  :)
